A good book, probably better than my rating. The setting didn't connect with me that well, but I think that is this reader's fault and not that of the book or its author. But, as a result, I'm not currently inclined to continue reading this series, even though it seems like a good one.

Really enjoyed the sf world building and the interesting pov with almost everything taking place in Nigeria. Good characters, very anti hero vibes in almost everyone. It did feel a bit rushed at the end like the editor had a deadline. Would recommend if you really like sf.

CW/TW: drugging, kidnapping, stealing, murder, guns, sexual assault (character kisses another character without consent), mentions of lynching/beating to death, torture, ableist slurs, racial slur
I loved this book so much!
For weeks I have been struggling to get through a book and then finally I start this one and my brain refuses to stop reading because it is so damn good and I love it so much.
This book just reminded me of how much I love sci-fi like this and why I'll be reading the entire trilogy.
Kaaro is a hot mess of a man who sees beautiful women everywhere he goes. He is, again, a hot mess but I love this hot mess who refuses to save the world because it's not his thing (lol). I especially love this particular hot mess with Femi. I love their relationship and the way they interact with each other, I hope I get more of that in the next book.
I also love Layi so much, soft beautiful boy that he is. I want to know more about Layi, and Femi of course, and Aminat, because moghal has secrets and we stan. The complexity of the chacarters makes me want to know more, to peel away at the layers of them and find out how they tick (I think this statement is particularly clever becuase if a situation in the book), I want to know more about them and I am ready to love them even more.
The biological part of everything went over my head. Like, I did bio in school but lol, I wasn't very good at it, so. I didn't really understand what the biology was about, but that didn't take away from my enjoy of the book. I loved it all them same. The words were sometimes bombastic and I spent a bit of the book consulting a dictionary, but again, it didn't take way from the book, it was still enjoyable.
Tade Thompson had given me something I didn't know I needed but that I did. And then made me crave more of it. I'm excited and nervous for the next one, but I'm ready!
`... Can you do as you’re told for once?’
‘“For once”? I always do as I’m told.’
‘Call me Mrs. Alaagomeji.’
‘I almost always do as I’m told.’

This book was a trip. Great world building, and although the many timejumps made it somewhat discombobulating it never lost me.
Kaaro is a dick though. He is misogynist, oppotunistic, rude and mostly moralless. I did not enjoy spending all this time in his brain and his weird sexual thoughts and fantasies gave me the ick. Still, I cared about what happened to him, which is a real achievement.
This book and its world completely absorbed me for a couple of days and it was a fun ride. Not for everyone I think, but I'm eager to read the rest of the trilogy
