So you've read Little Paris Bookshop and are thinking about reading this one.

Good news: This is substantially better. It has better writing and better characters. There is substantially less time devoted to the insanity of the river trip.

Bad news: It's roughly the same book.

More bad news: The characters are equally as unbelievable.

Decent news: You get to hating them a bit less.

Good news: It is a very fast read.

Bad news: The first sixty are rough goes and the last 100 are bad. You will feel as trapped as Henri in the last 100 pages. That is, until you get to the last 10 pages where you will audibly, and with malice, hiss, "what the fuck??"

It's a fine read. The writing is competent and relatively easy. The story is a bit lacking but not enough to make you too bored. If you have the book, go ahead and read it but don't seek it out.

Very interesting, fantastically descriptive book.

Not something I would normally pick up but I did end up liking it. Was a little slow in parts but otherwise a good read.

Probably the book that has most made me feel something real and deep.

“That’s the magic of literature. We read a story, and something happens. We don’t know what or why, nor which sentence was responsible, but the world has changed and will never be the same again.” (97)

A gorgeous novel of life, death and dreams! I will need to think about this one for weeks to come. Read it, and know there is more to life than meets the eye.
