Celebrations around the World by Katy Halford is an illustrated book about different holidays around the world. She teaches us not only about christian holidays but also about other religions and non-religious holidays, such as the International Festival of the Sahara. The illustrations are pretty and colorful to keep the reader’s attention and most of the holidays have four little paragraphs explaining the basics. It’s a fun little starter book to teach your children about other cultures and religions.

Young readers love holiday books and this one is a celebration of holidays that take place around the world. It has a good variety of holidays with quick explanations of them and what occurs on that day(s). I was annoyed seeing the Thanksgiving myth was used to explain how Thanksgiving started.

When my daughter was younger, I used to try to celebrate holidays we were unfamiliar with. It is fun to try to make the foods, and enjoy the activities of other cultures. To this day, she still knows how to make latkes and challah.

My point being, that as travel broadens the mind, so does information, and this book is a delighful introduction to celebrations from around the world.

Celebrations around the world

It makes for a wonderufl stepping stone for children to go on and disvoer more about each celebration, and if they are luck y enough to live in a diverse community, they might even know someone who celebrates these self-same holidays.

There were a few odd choices, thrown in, such as the 4th of July and Bastille day, but they too are holidays. I also found it odd that the Hungry Ghost festival, which is an August holiday, was stuck in with Halloween. I was glad that Day of the Dead got its own spread, but found it odd that they included parades as a way of celebrating, when that is a new feature, and until recently, there were no parades.

All in all, though a terrific introduciton to what people celebrate.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

This is a great book full of amazing holidays from around the world. The art and language is super inviting and hopefully just enough to get you interested to research more about different holidays. I know I certainly want to try the traditional red bean porridge they make for Dongji, the Korean festival of midwinter!!

An entertaining and informative book about holidays and celebrations around the world, both religious and secular. it starts with New Year's Day, and continues through the year to Christmas. Each two page spread has fun illustrations that depict different aspects of the celebrations, including foods, decorations, and activities, and gives a brief overview of the history and traditions of the celebration. A very interesting read! I always enjoyed learning about other cultures when I was a child, and I think today's children will enjoy it too.

Celebrations Around the World by Katy Halford is an amazing informational text for readers of all ages. This insightful book provides readers with information about holidays celebrated around the world without dumping too much information on you at once. The short blurbs about different aspects of the different holidays give the reader just a preview of all the traditions that are completed on these important days for different people around the world. The illustrations in the text also provide a depiction of these different cultures that is accurate and non-stereotypical which makes it enjoyable to read and look at the illustrations. This book would be perfect to use as an introduction to a social studies lesson about the holidays! As a future educator, I will definitely have this book available to students to explore cultures that may be different than their own.
