3⭐️ for thief Emmet only

I love thief Emmet unfortunately not Tatum. I wonder if the secret not out will she ever take him back after 80% of this book her treating Emmet that way? He deserved better. He was ready to forgive everything but not her. The writing in this book is beautiful but I’m just not into the story people making things more worst than they are even with this self sacrifice and everything

Spoilers ahead:
 Emmett and Tatum.
Told in Past and Present chapters. Starting with how they met in a bar on a mistaken blind date. Tragedy strikes.
The drowning of their son irrevocably damages their marriage and relationship. They have a daughter named Lucy. Conveys struggles of dealing with a maturing teen daughter. Tatum wants to sell their old house but Emmett wants to buy it.
Another tragedy hits when Lucy is injured in a car accident where mum Tatum was driving. She begins to understand how Emmett feels with the death of their son.
Slowly Lucy regains ability to walk and they reconcile and eventually get back together.
This was missing the feels and angst I expected to feel. The tension wasn’t there for me and the arguments weren’t impactful. The conversations felt a little repetitive and dialogue was lacklustre.

One of the best of 2021.

I know, unequivocally, when I read a book by this author that she is going to take me on a journey that will change the template of the person I am. She proved that yet again with this book. I thought I had it all figured out by the blurb. I was wrong. So very very very wrong.

I so often got swept up into the notion of love when I read. Not surprising since I read romance. There are a lot of books out there that fill the need and have characters that make me swoon. It is natural. However, sometimes I forget the epicness of love that is so unconditional that it feels like my soul is being consumed. This book consumed me. It was captivating. For the life of me, I could not picture what had happened in this story that would change this epic love.

Told in past and present I was able to watch this story unfold between Emmett and Tatum. I loved everything about their connection; the easy rapport, the playfulness, the one-in-a-lifetime type of love. Therefore, as the secret slowly came out, I was even more heartbroken all because of a promise. The unconditional love that Emmett has for Tatum and Lucy had me questioning if I have ever felt love as profound. The sacrifices he made. My heart hurts. He stole it, much like he stole Tatum's. I was able to fall in love and feel everything that Tatum felt. Tatum grew on me. Especially, as the story grew. At first, I didn't understand but as the story progressed I felt the plethora of things that she felt. Add in Lucy. Sweet lord, this girl... Such a mixture of both of her parents. I loved the relationship that she had with her dad.

The author captivated me with a story that packs a wallop of a lesson. yet, she is mindful that some things are beyond questioning. It doesn't mean that the lesson doesn't need to be learned but rather that some good can come from those things. I loved this story about love. One of my favorites of 2021 and from this author.

4.5 stars rounded up because this story is so important.

You know when someone says, “This book will stick with me a long time.” Well this is one of those books. Your life can change in 30 seconds, the drop of a dime, the blink of an eye. That is what happened to Emmett, Tatum and Lucy, but one this is for sure. Emmett will not ever break his promise of putting Lucy first.

Written in “then and now” chapters from mostly Emmett’s perspective, you will fall in love with him and his love for his family. When I came to the part of the book where the title “clicked” I was devastated. Learning about what happened and the miscommunications after just made me sad for everyone involved. Then, as more and more started to come out, I got a little peeved actually.

I don’t want to give too much away, but this book is heavy and so so sad. It’s about a man who loves his family more than anything and will do whatever it takes, even lose them, to make them happy. Unfortunately, we only get his side and even when we think we are doing what’s best, we need to remember that we can’t make decisions for others without drastic consequences.

This is a book everyone needs to read at least once, just to understand the gravity and how your life can change in an instant.

Ugly crying alert

Emmett and Tatum met by accident when she mistook him for her blind date. He was so taken with her that he played along until it was time to part ways. After a whirlwind relationship, a surprise pregnancy, 12 years of marriage and 2 tragedies, they divorced. Not because they fell out of love, but because the death of a child is not something you ever get over, and where blame is involved, it changes a relationship severely.

5 years later Emmett is still madly in love with Tatum. She has seemingly moved on, is in a serious relationship with another man, and yet he just cannot let her go. As they start to grow closer again, Emmet starts to wonder: he stole her once, can he do it again?

Well. I spent about 85% of this book trying not to ugly cry. I went in blind and holy emotions, Batman! Don’t do that. Don’t go in blind. You need to be emotionally prepared for this one!

Told mostly from Emmett’s point of view, it flashes back and forth between the present and the past which worked really well for the telling of this story. Emmet and their daughter, Lucy, have a secret which was fairly easy to guess - at least the gist of it. I totally understand why they kept it from Tatum but I feel like sooooo much extra heartache could have been avoided if he and Tatum had just communicated better.

I also feel like Tatum was quite…I don’t know… selfish? But that’s not quite it. She very much seemed to have one rule for Emmett and another rule for everyone else. To suggest her boyfriend would want to see her daughter more than once a week but it was “different” when Emmett brought up the fact that that’s exactly what he got in the custody agreement for his OWN daughter? I get that she was angry and blamed him for the loss of their son, but it just seemed really vindictive. Especially when Emmett had only ever been agreeable. And especially after what happened with her and Lucy.

Emmett is just the most wonderful character. You feel his pain, his grief, his love, jealousy, and everything in between. And yet he’s all give.

So grab the tissues, maybe a puppy or a kitten to cheer you up after, and dive in.

This is hands down the best book I've read so far in 2021!

Right from the beginning I was hooked, I could feel all kinds of emotions come up and I knew I was going to be in for an emotional ride. This storyline is tragic, heart-wrenching, haunting, romantic and truly tear jerking. I cried many many times as the author managed to keep me engaged in the storyline and really connecting with the characters, making everything feel so real.

Honestly I loved everything about this book, I don't normally re read books but I can't wait to dive right back in to this one. It's a book that I would recommend to everyone!

This was my first book by this author but it will not be my last, I look forward to reading more ASAP!

Omg your books are so good…. They break you and then put you back together… I cried I laughed and I cried more…..
