Wonderful building atmosphere and thematically rich, but I must be honest and say that James' prose took some time to get used to. By the time I got the hang of it, the novella was over. I enjoyed the ambiguity of the ending, and the use of the unsaid as a powerful presence.

A classic example of epistolary fiction, I really enjoyed how the horror of the unknown grew throughout this story and you were questioning whether it was supernatural or madness. As it was written in 1800s, the ghostly aspect is quite subtle, but the protagonists reactions still resonate today, even with the more flowery descriptions. Emma Thompson was an excellent narrator.
