I, sometimes, enjoyed the writing style. Sometimes I wanted to rip my hair off for how convoluted it was. I really like reading about people being paranoid and descending to madness. So that bit worked for me. Loved the ending although i understand it’s not a crowd pleasure. I think I really enjoyed the amount of repression and restraint with which the story was told. If Henry James didn’t have to prove himself better than his peers so bad with syntactically complex writing style, this would have been a banger for me

I feel weird rating a classic so low, but it was painful to get through. The prose is so opaque and unnecessary, I almost gave up when the grounds are described as “empty with a great emptiness.” Maybe that’s the point- it’s difficult to see through to what’s actually happening. Either way, the unreliable narrator and most of the ambiguities of the story are interesting but relatively obvious if you make it that far

Interesting and creepy. At times a little confusing, but amazing that this is over 100 years old.
