I finished it in one sitting because I was afraid to go to sleep. My roommate was working (bar tending) so she wasn't expected home until about 3:30a. I made our dog sit at my feet (he was not normally allowed in the living room and he was very hesitant to stay with me) ... in fact I wanted him actually touching me ... if he got up to go get a drink from his bowl in the kitchen, I went with him.

I think my main issue is how disappointed I feel I am with the book. It certainly wasn’t scary and the overall style of writing just didn’t sit right with me. I found myself often bored, or feeling as if I was reading some academic paper that was looking into possessions vs. metal illnesses. Overall, it’s fine. It’s a good story.

William Peter Blatty also wrote the screenplay so I don’t feel bad saying I prefer the film.

Obviously I was going to like this since The Exorcist is one of my all-time fave horror movies. So it shouldn't be super surprising that I enjoyed the movie more than the book in this case! Not to do a full review exclusively comparing this to the movie but also that's what I'm going to do.

The pacing is way better in the movie, it felt like there was so much more set up and background here before we got to the good scary stuff that I knew was coming. Which isn't inherently a bad thing, but like I said... I knew what was coming so I was excited lol. The whole thing had a great creepy undertone that the movie captured so well. As a whole, the movie is a fantastic adaptation of this as a source material. I think this is a story that just translates really well to screen and resonates more (for me) as a film because a lot of the horror is so visual. That being said, there definitely were moments in here that are genuinely scary. I had a few parts where I was like all excited to be reading The Exorcist and then stopped and realized wait... this is scary....

Overall really fun and glad I finally read the original behind one of my faves. And a perfect start to the official spooky season. Definitely not something everyone will enjoy but worth checking out if you like the movie!

I have always wanted to read this masterpice.
And William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist ived up way beyond the hype.
Blatty's witting is both beautiful and powerful, while even during the most disturbing momemts thew writing is so beautifuly it was like a dream.
I read the novel as a audiobook since Blatty narrated it.
It was a performance both terrifying and powerful.
Even after just rewaching the director's cut of the film , which Blatty wrpte the script it was almost suprising to see how word-for-word the film was. Expecily since book-to-movie adaptaions change things so much.
The novel and audiobooks were excelent.

horrifying and vulgar. the fate of someone young, helpless, and innocent is ripped bodily from herself, her parents, and medical and psychological authority. Priests provide support and help but are also weary and human. They are seeking and leaning on a higher power as well, worn down by evil.

The story is vulgar and disgusting, troubling and heavy, yet balanced with hope and a true look at kindness and light in the face of evil and guilt.

The movie is undeniably a horror classic, but the book holds its own.

pick up the audiobook read by the author for a truly disturbing experience. I had to turn off the audiobook several times and switch to something more upbeat because the author read the writing so well.

Even if you’re not an audiobook fan, the book itself is also a good read. I did a combination of both.
