On to není špatný příběh, jen dost předvídatelný.

Gets better as it progresses. This is quite a dark atmospheric novel which is very well written and translated. The characters are so well depicted that I felt Liv’s despair, grubby clothes and fear. Not a cheery or light hearted read, but a great sense of dark, cold winters, oppressive, controlling behaviour and human struggle. Liam and Liv are both trapped and controlled by domineering family members; this and the love for their children are a key focus here. The pace does accelerate after the murder and there are a few twists in store.

Wow! Liv is such an interesting main character. She is incredibly unique, as is her situation. She is a very strong protagonist, who deals with the judgements of every person in her home town, which she has never left, as she lives the same mundane day over again and again. The book also follows the Liam, who is attempting to find his way in the world and look after his daughter, while he tries not to get roped into his brothers constant money schemes- the latest being stealing Liv’s fathers fortune. When it all goes wrong these unique characters lives are intertwined in a way none of them expected. These different POV’s provided for a quick and engaging read. Jackson’s descriptions of the surroundings are detailed and unusual, allowing the reader’s imagination to roam. However, if you are someone who reads a lot of crime or mystery novels, then the ending may be predictable.

I received this book in exchange for a review and it was okay but I felt like it could have given a lot more. The cover and the blurb enticed me but I found the full story a bit average. I wouldn't say that I didn't enjoy it but I also wasn't gripped and desperate to know what was going to happen next.

Whilst I did want to know who murdered Vidar, I found that nothing really happened in general and the book could have been at least half as long and not really lose anything. I didn't really click with many of the characters and only really felt like I supported one or two of them.

However, overall I would say I still enjoyed it in general. I particularly liked Liam's character and was rooting for him to come out of the story in a good place. I would recommend this book for people who have exhausted their to be read pile, but I wouldn't recommend that they put it at the top of their future reads list.

There’s no denying that “The Last Snow” is an beautifully atmospheric and incredibly detailed Scandi suspense noir. Stina Jackson is the author of “The Silver Road” - which I also enjoyed and “The Last Snow” is her latest novel. It is perfect for fans of dark, Scandi suspense who prefer a slow boil, simmering thriller.
Set in northernmost Sweden, in an isolated Lapland village forest, eighty year old Vidar Bjorland lives with his daughter Liv and her seventeen year old son Simon. The story is told through the voices of Liv and Liam Lilja who is a local drug dealer with his unlikeable brother Gabriel. Liv is dominated by her reclusive father and is obviously troubled. A peculiar family, they are the village gossip and rumour has it Vidar is sitting on a fortune whilst living in a derelict and rundown existence. Having possibly made his money from questionable business decisions and making many enemies along the way, have the people he’s wronged, want what is rightfully theirs back? Single dad Liam and his brother Gabriel sell drugs and has a desire to build a life for him and his daughter away from criminal activities and his brother’s bullying behaviour. Told in alternating timelines between Liv’s youth and the present, it was at times a little confusing but after a while you become accustomed to the layout. This is a slow burn story that without doubt focuses on flawed characters, most are unlikeable but are very well portrayed. I particularly respected Liv’s honesty at her feelings for her father and her life and my heart went out to her and her unhappy existence.
At times chilling, constantly dark and with an ending that surprised me, “The Last Snow” is a decent read and I will happily read more by this author again in the future.
