Minor Detail

This book is the definition of small but mighty. A heartbreaking story. A repeating history. I completely understand why this book was chosen to be recognized. I don’t really know how to put together my thoughts on this yet other than denial of this history does not move the world towards peace. Pay attention to the minor details. The minor details matter.

This is one of the most unsettling and unforgettable books I’ve ever read. Told from two perspectives, the story hits hard in all the right ways. The dual narratives are jarring, but that’s what makes them so powerful—forcing me to sit with discomfort and reflect on the silences in history.

The first part, told from the soldier’s point of view, makes you bear witness to the horrifying rape and killing of a young Bedouin girl. Decades later, the second narrator becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth about this event. As a reader, you can’t help but feel drawn into the same obsession, digging for justice and struggling with the weight of it all.

Within these pages, time collapses — contrasting the past and present, showing how moments and “minor detail” linger for generations. Reading this was unnerving, to say the least. This is a book I won’t forget anytime soon.

💭How many “minor details” out there in our history and our past do we deliberately ignore?

“Besides, sometimes it’s inevitable for the past to be forgotten, especially if the present is no less horrific“

A must read novella that will stick with you long after you turn the last page
