Her books seem to always provide exactly what I need.

if i could give this a 3.5 i would!
there is definitely some very useful exercises in this book for new (and unmotivated) writers.
a bit of a plod through though and i found myself skimming at the end.

started working my way through this book last spring, taking a break in the middle when the library demanded it back. I didn’t do all the exercises, which is kinda maybe cheating, but regardless it got me back into a writing habit. I appreciate Julia Cameron’s egalitarian view of writing being a pursuit available to everyone. She ends the book with the story of an unnamed famous author at her dinner party, scoffing at her self-help books as “ruining” writing. Which I suppose makes sense if writing is solely seen as an art or even vocation. Yet Cameron sees writing as a vehicle to better understanding of ourselves and the world around us. “We should write because writing brings clarity and passion to the act of living.” Though she certainly doesn’t say it shouldn’t be a career, her main focus is helping people tap into their creativity, regardless of what happens with it later.

“When we forget ourselves, when we let go of being good and just settle into just being a writer, we begin to have the experience of writing through us. We retire as the self-conscious author and become something else — the vehicle for self-expression. When we are just the vehicle, the storyteller and not the point of the story, we often write very well — we certainly write more easily.”

I really like Julia Cameron's books. Her prose reads with the rhythm and color of poetry, so it isn't like your typical 'how-to-write' book. Whereas other books 'tell' you where and how to get inspired, Cameron does this by merely putting words to the page. I also think this is the most encouraging and open book on writing I've ever read. I call it my 'block-remover.'

This book is fine, and well-suited to a new writer seeking encouragement.

I was hoping to recapture some of the magic of "The Artist's Way," -- the breakout book that changed my writing habits. This, and others I've read since, are simply the same ideas delivered with less impact.

Genuinely inspiring wisdom and practical advice for the blocked or budding writer. I would recommend this to anyone who is struggling with self-doubt, self-criticism, or simply getting started.

I'm working through the exercises with my writing group and absolutely loving it. Cameron encourages completely manageable pieces of writing that are helping me to relax about writing and to welcome it into my life as a routine. I'm finding some powerful ideas in this book and within myself.
