“You started by drawing a cross. You added a dot in each of the four open squares that created, and then a curve on the top, like the end of a shepherd’s crook. Finally, you drew a series of curling lines that ran around the whole shape, joining this dot up to that point of the cross, and so on. The lines became increasingly complicated, weaving between others, but were always guided by the endpoint they were curving inexorably toward. If you followed the instructions carefully, you created a simple maze.”

This story was complex, heartbreaking, nerve wrecking, and much more. There are two vastly different sibling relationships, both effecting the other and sad in their own ways. Every event, from the very beginning, is intertwined and messy— until it isn’t. Though I enjoyed it, there were some parts that fell flat and questions left unanswered, on purpose but would have benefited more from being answered.

This book had me hooked in the beginning. I was so excited to see how each shifting POV intertwined to create an entirely different story than the one I first imagined. I was surprised, however, disappointed in the same breath.

Sweet Katie, a little overly cautious but rightfully so after assuming guilt for her brother's attack that left him disfigured all those years ago. And then Chris -- the outsider, and complete outsider to the world's whole plan it feels like.
This story is like an ever-evolving map meant to confuse the reader yet draw them in. Like I said, in the beginning, I was all in. However, as layers were built on top of each other and stories began to try and meld together, I simply got a little more lost and figured the predictable aspects. The story really slowed down after about half way through and I found it really difficult to finish.

The descriptions in this book were very well thought out, and the story-building was good. There were some twists and turns that I didn't predict, however, the more complex the story intertwining got, the harder it was to follow.

I admit, the beginning of this book was a little confusing. There were so many characters being introduced all at once and it took a while to figure out who was who. But once I was 70-80% into the book, it was all coming together.

Alex North is an amazing author. His writing and his twists are incredible and very shocking. I wish I could rate this book higher, but it was just a good read.
