The First Love Cookie Club by Lori Wilde

Lori Wilde adds a Christmas novel to her Twilight, Texas series. If you are not familiar with Twilight, you do not need to back paddle and read #1 and #2. The First Love Cookie Clue stands as its own novel. If you enjoyed the town of Twilight, you can easily continue reading the series.

I prefer historical fiction, but this modern Christmas tale was enjoyable. Snow appeared, cookies were baked, and gifts were given as well as received. Past and present overlapped to create a bright future for everyone in the little town of Twilight.

On a side note, for the over 21 crowd, Wilde also included a holiday mixer called Cranberry Snowdrifts. "They're made with cranberry juice cocktail, creme de cacao, and white chocolate liqueur; it tastes like white chocolate-covered cranberries. Help yourself."

Time Period: Present Day
Location: Twilight, Texas, USA

When Sarah Collier stays with her Grams during the holiday season, she has had a tradition of making Kismet Cookies and putting them under her pillow at night. It is said that if you sleep with the Kismet cookie under your pillow on Christmas Eve, you will dream of your one true love that you are destined to be with. Sarah has dreamed about her true love every year that she has done this. When she dreams of Travis Walker, she just knows they are meant to be together. When she receives the news that he is getting married though, she is heartbroken and races to the wedding to stop it from happening. Sarah halts the wedding and tries to explain to him that they are meant to be together and gets her dreams crushed when he tells her to go home. Since that day, Sarah has dreaded Christmas and left Twilight behind.

Sarah has grown up now and made drastic changes. She lost weight and wrote a book about her horrible mistake in Twilight in the way of a children's book. She is now Sadie Cool and wealthy, yet she is still alone and thinking of Travis. When Jazzy, Travis' daughter, writes to Sadie Cool asking to see her for her Christmas wish, Sarah decides to go back to Twilight and give the sick child her wish. Along the way, we get to see Travis realize what he should have known all along, Sarah break out of her shell, and little Jazzy pull at your heart strings with her sickness and upbeat personality.

This was another great read by author Lori Wilde featuring the town of Twilight. While we do get to hear about a few of the characters from previous books, they don't really make an appearance throughout this story. The ending was abrupt and tied up within a small ending chapter and I would have liked to have had it paced better at the end. Other than that, this was a book that will leave you with a new look on Christmas.

The First Love Cookie Club by Lori Wilde
Sarah is an author writing books for children. She was due back in Twilight to help with the angel tree, where you selected a name and granted their wish.
She had tried to stop Travis Walker from marrying when she was 15. She is now 24 and uses a different name for writing.
Love the legend of the cookie and catching up with others in town and their jobs. Such a relaxed atmosphere.
His wife had left him, not being able to go through the multiple hospitalizations the child went through. He was there for his daughter, Jazzie and making sure she had everything.
Sarah was Jazzie's wish as she reads her book all the time and wanted to meet her for the longest time.
She gets kidnapped and taken to the Horny Toad Tavern, holiday costume and holiday aromas. The people of town knew her and her relatives.
Although they were thrown together on the float for the parade she tried to avoid him at other events, at all costs.
The cookie club was at it again, Sarah and Travis both agreed that the club was matchmaking again...
Love all the charity events Sarah takes part in, the baking, the parade, book signing, etc...
Healing power of cookies, this is priceless!
She took a peddle boat out on the lake to relax, it was so peaceful and calm, and the boat started filling up with water...
Story is of others and how secrets of the past are brought out and it breaks couples up.
Hot passionate romance only adds to this tale.

A corny hallmark Christmas movie in print.

This was a good book. Sarah reminded me of myself in a lot of ways. The writing was sweet. The story of the ex wife was really not good, it seemed contrived and forced. The same with the child's illness.

I really enjoyed this book. I felt like the problems and emotions were ones that were realistic. While both Travis and Sarah have issues, none of them seem to overwhelm the story. It starts with Sarah as an awkward teenager discovering that the guy she's been dreaming of is about to marry someone else. After humiliating herself by trying to stop the wedding she swears she will never risk her heart again. Fast forward nine years, and Sarah has become a successful children's author. When she receives a letter from a sick fan, she reluctantly returns to Twilight, only to discover that the little girl is Travis's daughter.

I had a little trouble connecting with Sarah at first. She was so resistant about going to Twilight that she came across as a bit selfish. Even once she was there she seemed rather standoffish. Some could be blamed on her memories of that day, but other things about her life are slowly revealed and begin to explain her problem. Her initial meeting with Travis shows her that she has never really forgotten those feelings for him. She also knows that she won't stay in Twilight so there's no sense in starting anything with him, tempting though it may be. She doesn't count on the ladies of the cookie club doing their best to push them together, or that Travis seems equally drawn to her. As the week goes on Travis and Jazzy start to break down the walls that Sarah has built up to keep people out. She starts to connect with them and others, but still doesn't see herself as able to have that happy ending.

Travis was a wonderful hero. From his kind attitude toward Sarah on his wedding day to the amazing father he is today he is awesome. He may have made a mistake by getting his girlfriend pregnant when he was twenty, but he was determined to do the honorable thing and take care of them both. He was an involved father from the beginning, and even more so when Jazzy got so sick. He took on the role of both parents when his wife left them, making Jazzy the center of his world. When Sarah came back to Twilight he was surprised by the strength of his attraction to her. He would be very happy to see where it goes, but he has some of his own baggage to overcome. Between watching his dad fall apart after his mom's death and then his disastrous marriage, Travis resists the idea of soulmates, fearing that his life would fall apart too if he were to lose someone he cared about that much. I really liked the way that he saw Sarah's pain and fears and gave her the space she needed to process what they were beginning to feel for each other.

Even as they began to acknowledge their feelings for each other, there were still some obstacles to overcome. Jazzy's mother comes back to town, causing Sarah to question her own place in their lives. Sarah has some professional problems that also interfere with her decision making process. Then there is a health crisis with Jazzy that brings a whole host of feelings to the surface, causing both Sarah and Travis to take a good look at what they really want from life.

The town itself is another character in the book. I enjoyed seeing the various Christmas traditions and how they worked with what Travis and Sarah were going through. The people had the usual small town nosiness and tendency to interfere, but mostly in a positive manner. There was a secondary storyline that was left hanging, but it is addressed in a later series of novellas.

This book was a lot of fun, like reading a Hallmark Christmas movie. It was a fun read, and the characters were engaging enough for this read.

I think the main negative for me with this book was that I read a Christmas novel in the middle of April, while it was 80 degrees here in San Diego.

I probably won't follow through with the series, but I will definitely be reading this cozy romance again-when the season is right.

I would recommend this to any looking for a Christmas-y romance. It's exactly what you would hope for.
