Anne is one of the most wonderful and inspiring characters I've read about in a long time. Despite her (sometimes annoying) faults, I couldn't help but fall absolutely in love with her and the rest of Avonlea. And despite being over 100 years old and english not being my first language, I found it very easy to read.
I read this as a child and absolutely loved it and I revisited now as an adult and it’s just as interesting and lovely and maybe even more so now that I grasp deeper meanings. I related more to Marilla and appreciated more about Matthew and Marilla this time around. Truly a beautiful classic tale. Here are some deeper thoughts:
-Anne is very like so many children today who have lacked a good upbringing and any sort of consistency in her life. I almost broke down hearing her talk about her window friends especially as she hides in the cupboard from the drunken husband. That will choke you up a little. Especially since I know little girls like this in real life now.
-I also love that I’m catching more of Marilla’s perspective as she sees little glimpses of her own inner dialogue in Anne’s incessant talking. When I read this one as a child I assumed that Anne was disrespectful in her speaking of and to God and religious things in the way she does and as an adult I am more inclined to think that the author’s intent may be more to point to the fact that Anne had never been shown what love looks like and that Matthew and Marilla are able to demonstrate love and guidance that Anne needs that exemplifies God’s love for people and His character in loving the spiritual orphaned unlovable. There’s a line somewhere in the first 8 chapters where Marilla thinks something along these lines. So it’s interesting to see how good godly adoptive/foster parents are to influence their charges and how selfless that love is. I have several friends who are adoptive/foster parents and my mind went to them as I worked through the first portion of this book.
-Also, why do Anne’s feelings about her looks and her vanity about them explain my whole life of relationship with my own looks?

4.5!!!! I love Avonlea, I wish I lived at Green Gables, I adore Anne and Marilla and Matthew AND EVERYONE! This book just warms my heart and soul and gives me so much hope and wonder. :)
there’s an appeal to this book that doesn’t have anything specific to do with the characters in particular but more the whole vibe and feeling / atmosphere of the novel. and that feeling was one i adored— being able to step back into those feelings and excitements of a girl’s childhood meant so much to me as i read through the book.
