These novellas are notorious for having such beautiful writing and captivating stories and that was definitely the case. I loved this introduction into the bigger world(s) that we are going to be exploring throughout the course of the series. Nancy, for me, was such a lovable character. I could relate to her wanting to just be and not perceived but despite these feelings she still managed to develop such adorable and heart warming friendships in her time at the home.

Every Heart a Doorway is an interesting novella by Seanan McGuire and I'm glad my friend Bree suggested that I read it. I went into this story without knowing the premise and I think that was a great choice, so I won't say too much about the book. I'll just say that I really appreciated the asexual representation and I liked that this book kept my interest for it's duration, even though it was really short.

Overall I enjoyed this novella, I'm going to give it 4 stars out of 5.

I liked this! A very quick read that I would’ve savored if I’d known it was so perfectly Halloween-y!

I will say that I guessed the baddie by accident very early on but said “no, they have to be a red herring”… Lol!

A tad predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless. A really interesting zoom in on what fantasy worlds mean to children, and what they protect them from. Not sure what to make of Kade’s story to be honest; it’s much bleaker than the rest & I didn’t feel we got a satisfactory explanation for that.

I also feel that Nancy is overshadowed by nearly every other character; she felt like a shadow of a person there only to introduce us to the universe & experience shock on our behalf. this was a book where the main character was the least interesting person in it.

Halloween read 1/5(?) down!

Whimsical in a twisted kind of way. I am intrigued and looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

this book was so fast but so slow. so beautifully written but so devoid of substance. so deep but so shallow. so straightforward but so confusing. so unique but so bland. truly...a kind of masterpiece.

literally there are maybe 2 likeable characters (
sumi dies too soon to really be a main character
, nancy doesnt really seem to do much except get dragged around by the plot,
jill is a fucking MURDERER
, and jack is just...so straight cut) and even then cristopher seems like an add-on, if that makes sense? the ending was also so weirdly executed and i just...dont like how the deaths in the book were almost glossed over?? like i didnt feel any real emotion from the characters except eleanor :/
