I don't know how I feel about it? It was quite hard to read because it was written in this manner that some might call whimsical but I'd just say it's an Alice in Wonderland vibe, which is liking having a bunch of disco lights going around and giving you a headache. The plot twist was so obvious and I don't really understand why the book ended the way it did? Because it was short, it was quite shallow but also, I'm glad it was short because I didn't want to have to sit through so much of it. Glad I have read the first and understand what people are talking about but no more.

Loved this little book, will be picking up the rest of the series! My only complaint was there was a lot of high level vocabulary that I had to look up, and there were a few scenes or segways that felt very rushed through. That being said, it was a very interesting introduction to this world and series. I found each character unique and intriguing, and I appreciated that they all had different stories for the doors they walked into (whether I liked them or not). Loved the diversity too - ace/aro and trans main characters. Look forward to continuing!

I can think of no other review (and no higher praise) than that this is exactly the book I was trying to write in high school, down to the asexual main character.

The levels of macabre and whimsy are perfectly ratio'd, the cast strikes the perfect balance between ensemble and crowd, and I found the plot impressively engaging (not to mention existant) for a novella.

And I'm obsessed with the twins, so I cannot WAIT to hit up book 2.
