I received a copy of this ebook in a Goodreads giveaway.
I felt like this book was a bit of a bait and switch. I was really intrigued with the beginning of this story then it turned into a romance, which would have been fine if the beginning didn’t feel like it was going in a totally different direction in the beginning of the story. I normally like romance but this one didn’t really work for me.

Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren is a supernatural, religious thriller. This book starts off following a crime committed by a man who tells the story of the crime to his lawyer, showing the reader in a flashback. The book then brings us to the present and changes the storyline to follow a demon by the name of Crighton, who is found to be a revered soul collector. Crighton has his own struggle when he faces The Sovereign, which is an underground group experimenting on supernatural beings. It is here that Crighton’s life changes forever, with many secrets revealed about him.

I cannot stress my love for this book enough. McFarren spins a tale like no other with it comes to a supernatural genre crossing over with religious beings and lore. To me, this book came off as unique in its telling, with many different aspects outside of the Bible, featuring many aspects of Heaven and Hell. The lore built up in the book is well-crafted, interesting, and intricate. I also did not guess many of the points that were revealed later, but extremely pleased when I was correct about something hinted at earlier on with Crighton. This book takes you on a thrilling journey that leads to you wanting more of it.

I was on the edge of my seat reading this book, and it was frustrating when I had to put it down. The way McFarren set up the start of the novel to how she wrapped everything up gave me such a satisfying feeling, but the thirst for more set in this world. I hope there will be more to have with Crighton. Additionally, the tension between the characters and the different characters are so captivating. I do warn readers of a scene between Crighton and Ariel that may be triggering to some. However, I think that fans of the supernatural, and Supernatural the show, would love this book!

Easing into a world where angels and demons exist, Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren begins with a slice of small-town life tilted horribly askew. A demon comes to call on fire chief Benjamin Poe at a time where his family and sanity have been pushed to the edge. Crighton Daemonium is no average demon. Sent by Lucifer himself to collect souls for consumption in hell, his visit to Lochton, Illinois, ends with lives destroyed and Ben Poe begging for redemption. Crighton’s menacing stature, black hair, and painted nails do not go unnoticed by locals but he disappears before taking any blame for Poe’s downfall. We follow him later into the forest to a secluded cabin on a visit to another man whose crimes would shake the most hardened of hearts.

Having harvested souls to return to his kingdom, Crighton is given a new task by the unsatisfied Lucifer on another journey back to Earth with an added mission; find and slaughter two angels.

At this point, Soul Seeker remains in a realm of demonic fantasy that serves as a fresh take on war in heaven. The various powers and glamour of a demonic soul-catcher from Hell couples with an exciting spin on the reality of angelic beings and is exceptionally compelling. Astral projection, gilt feathered wings, the insatiable sexual appetite of demons, the ability to save or condemn a soul, and some familiar returns to scripture or gospel serve as an excellent playing field for some new ideas on how these beings would interact.

The relationships forged between demons and angels, or Heaven and Hell, are at home in this dark fantasy world created by McFarren. While murder and sex simmer in the background they are never thrust to the forefront as the characters themselves, their personalities and relationships, certainly take center stage. In between those two extremes of storytelling lay the fantastical powers of these otherworldly creatures. While we are spared a description of Heaven and are left guessing at what that landscape would look like we are given quite a topography of Hell as a subdued fortress of fear, torture, and loathing. Very at home in this very realism-based story about places that we've only read about or imagined, the writing style is grounded in reality and not overly flourished or dramatic. This makes Soul Seeker feel very real and the reader is enraptured easily.

While the first third of the book reads somewhat like an anthology of characters that Creighton meets or destroys, the next portion leading to the finale weaves a thread from beginning to end. They deal with a scientific faction on earth that is bound to experiment on angels and demons they know exist, and a defection from the pits of Hell angering the Lord within and this sparks the third arc when the angel Ariel and Chrighton meet under terrifying circumstances.

When it seems that we won't return to some of the characters that were quite expertly built at the start and left in the dust, the story does come full circle in a somewhat unexpected way. While it is hinted that this will be the beginning of a series it is a stand-alone story that does have a very fitting end yet leaves so many other avenues to explore. There are many opportunities to return to Creighton himself as he is ancient and could have been insinuating himself on Earth far longer than we suspect. While on the run from Hell, Creighton is poised to close the gap between the Underworld and Heavenly Gates; but will Earth be crushed in between? Soul Seeker leaves delicious ideas to the wonderment of the reader that it is exciting to have explored this world as in-depth as we have in this book. Easily a five-star read for those who enjoy a darker take on fantasy, enjoy religious science fiction, or quiet horror. With suspense and romance, action and adventure, this is a great choice for those looking to break out of a favorite genre as well. With a few surprises in relation to what we may or may not know about our cilivization’s religions, it is kept unique with the author's own spin.

The book begins with Crighton, Lucifer’s best soul-catcher demon, out on a mission to take out Poe’s son for the many sins his son committed. Poe is a righteous and heroic firefighter while his son is anything but. Despite the son’s flagrant morals, Poe resists his son’s soul to be taken away so much so that Crighton devises a devious method that would get him both the son and father’s souls.

The book’s narrative then completely shifts over to Crighton and his “life” as a demon subservient to his master Satan. Crighton is yet again entrusted with a new project to catch hold of an angel but as fate would have it, the demon and the angel come out of a sticky situation and fall in love. Will they ever be able to avenge the wrath of evil and the curse of God to be soulmates? You will have to read to find out.

This book gave me one hell of a (pun intended) crazy ride to Heaven, Hell and back to Earth. Although the book was predominantly a paranormal fantasy and romance, you could probably inject every other genre into it, including some horror. I’m not going to lie when I say this is possibly the strangest book I read this year. That being said, I think there were a lot of lessons to be learned from it such as the lines between evil and good, truth and lies, demons and angels, forbidden and not can all often be blurred with some redemption and selfless love. I tend to think every book has a conscious or subliminal lesson from its author and I felt this book largely was about good can change even the most vile person one strongly covets that change from within.

You know when you want to love a book but you just... don't? That's what happened to me with [b:Soul Seeker|53911727|Soul Seeker|Kaylin McFarren|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1605830475l/53911727._SY75_.jpg|84263668] by [a:Kaylin McFarren|3184417|Kaylin McFarren|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1557073485p2/3184417.jpg]. I read the synopsis and thought it sounded great, and I do love me some supernatural suspense, but I just could not get into this one. I thought it was very confusing, and I'm not sure if it was the writing or the plot or what, but that made me lose interest very quickly and I found myself not caring about what would happen next. There are also quite a few sex scenes (and this is not even halfway in) that I was just not into, and I wasn't sure how they fit into the plot. Life is too short to keep reading a book you aren't into so this is a DNF for me at about 50%. I do have the author's previous book and I am hoping for better luck. There are lots of great reviews for this one, so I definitely recommend checking it out if you think it sounds good!

Thank you to Get Red PR and the author for providing me with an advance review copy of this book. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

Soul seeker by Kaylin McFarren is a sensational and paranormal read that will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions from the very first page. We are introduced to Benjamin poe who is a devoted family man and a firefighter living in a small town. Benjamin ends up crossing paths with Crighton who is a soul seeker for Lucifer. Benjamin gets executed for murder and Crighton wins the soul he set out to retrieve, Benjamin. Crighton continues to search for souls to take but is kidnapped by members of the Sovereign group, a group known to experiment on supernatural beings. Crighton ends up falling in love with the one angel he was sent out to get, testing his loyalty to Lucifer.

Soul seeker is a dark, thrilling read with a bit of romance. Author Kaylin McFarren's writing displays her talent with the world she has created and the characters she has developed. The author clearly describes each place that I was able to imagine each scene. The characters are well developed and I enjoyed watching them progress throughout the book. When I first started reading this book, I didn't care for Crighton but the more I read the more I began to feel sorry for him. even though the story is broken into two parts, the author seamlessly intertwines the two to make one exhilarating read.

I highly recommend Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren as this book has a little of everything from gripping suspense, romance to twists and turns. I hope the author continues the story with a second book.
