Asra is a demigod who can write the future in her blood. She lives alone in a cave on the outskirts of a small village to keep her secret. When Ina, the girl she loves wants to take a manifest, a powerful second animal form, Asra writes that future in her blood. What she doesn’t know is that the future is hard to shape and everything goes wrong. Ina, blind to the fact that her village was destroyed by Asra, becomes a dragon manifest and sets off to fight and destroy the king. To stop her, Asra and her new friend Hal must fight to keep the future safe and discover the secrets of Asra’s power.

This was a fantastic prequel! One thing I didn’t love about Of Fire And Stars (this is a prequel to that book) is that there wasn’t a lot of worldbuilding and the fantasy aspect of the book was kind of left for the reader to figure out. This book did a great job of explaining all of the fantasy aspect in this book. You don’t have to read Of Fire And Stars to read this book, but I would recommend it because it really adds to the story. I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it if you liked Of Fire And Stars, or just love fantasy!

I didn't love this one nearly as much as I loved Of Fire and Stars. Everything just felt too rushed for me, especially the ending.

The strength in this book lay in Coulthurst's ability to write compelling relationships. I loved the development between Asra and Hal. I am here for that ship! Even the relationship between Ina and Nis felt real, even though we rarely saw it. I also loved the bi-rep in this book.

I really enjoyed the history that this story brings to the world that Audrey created with Of Fire and Stars.

There is a lot of action in this, and it is quite a fast paced story of self discovery, love and betrayal.

The only reason it doesn't get the full five stars, is that I felt the characters lacked a little bit of depth. I want to be able to put myself into the shoes of the characters, I want to feel, I want to be emotional about their success' and their failure's and sadly that didn't happen for me with this book. It fell a little flat in that department.

But still stunning descriptions, and a fantastic look at the history of this world.

I really liked OF Fire and Stars and so I decided to check out the prequel series. I really liked the representation and the storyline but I could not really connect with the characters and therefore was at times taken out of the story quite a bit.

I went into this blind, without knowing anything about the book. I loved the magic and fantasy but the romance was a bit more than I expected. Just a personal preference for lesser romance in fantasy adventures. I still enjoyed the read quite a bit, though. If you have no such bias against romance, you'll definitely love this! The representation is really well done, a society that doesn't think twice about same-sex relationships is so pleasant to read about (not a spoiler because that's literally in the first 2-3 pages). The female lead is a definite plus point.

As with Of Fire and Stars, it seemed like many actions happened in order to further the plot rather than because it made sense for that character. The villains seemed far too flatly evil and got to those points more quickly than I thought realistic. The development toward the ultimate conclusion was full of so many back-and-forths that I disengaged. However, I did enjoy the often beautiful writing, the magic elements, and Asra's struggles to find her place in the world and with the right people.

A lovely origin story for the kingdom of Zumorda! I loved the mythos and descriptions of how magic worked and people used it in their daily lives. I got a little tired of Asra's inner monologue. She questioned the same things over and over. It got a little boring.
