Let’s cut to the chase, this book explores something I have NEVER seen in YA. I am talking about a character that is attracted to both female and males. Bisexuality is nowhere in YA and I am so happy with the way the author portrayed in this book. I mean, yes there was action and a pretty good story to follow, but more importantly the character doesn’t offer apologies or explanations for the way that she is. Asra is bisexual and it doesn’t need to be explained.

The other thing that stood out to me about this book was the fact that Asra is an empathetic character. It is possible to have great power and still put the needs of other before yourself. As you read the book you see it doesn’t always work out for the best for Asra, but she still ends up where she needs to be. There aren’t enough characters with power and empathy. Asra has both and that makes her a hero to me. I know some may get frustrated by her but I loved this about her.

The writing in this book is very descriptive. I love descriptive writing and I could almost draw this world for you, because I was there thanks to the details the author provided. The characters were very well drawn, too. Ina and the king are both very well written characters. There were a few other characters that I grew to love in this story but I don’t want to give away too much.

This story is suppose to have happened 200 years before the events in OF FIRE AND STARS. This book could absolutely be read as a standalone. I would recommend this to fantasy fans especially if you are looking for a book with a LGBT theme that isn’t the only thing the story contains. INKMISTRESS was beautifully done.

(I rated this book 4/5 stars.)

Ahhh this was such a nice and exciting book I'm kind of sad the rest of the books in this universe are about different characters?
Honestly, the Main Love Interest in this is possibly one of my fave characters ever, PROTECT THIS DUMB SOFTIE. My main issue with this book was that while I could totally see why the main character fell for the love interest i just..... don't feel like i know why the love interest fell for the MC? I just feel like I barely even know Asra and/or she just.... doesn't have that much of a personality rip

Also while the plot was really nice I really wish there'd been More of it tbh (and it's just s o frustrating that somehow all the really interesting stuff happens off-screen in the lives of the antagonists, I spent a lot of time wishing I was reading their story instead tbh.

But this was still really nice and so sweet and the general world building is AMAZING. Also, Hal. BABY

A lot darker in themes than her first book but thoroughly enjoyable. I can't overstate how relieving it was to read a bisexual main character whose journey and framing is so free of the biphobia that far too frequently appears in queer writing.

tw: blood, kidnappings, death
this book is certainly interesting. the bi representation was refreshing as always and having wlw and mlm couples without their sole story being their struggles with homophobia. it also did a good job showing that lgbtq+ relationships can be toxic. a lot of times, it feels like wlw and mlm relationships are glorified, almost as if they can’t be unhealthy and the author did a really good job in showing that that isn’t always the case.

this book is a prequel to of fire and stars, but it definitely could be a stand alone. i haven’t red of fire and stars because it’s next, but from what i can tell this story is set a pretty good while before of fire and stars, which is fine. it also means this book could be a stand alone, as it ends in a resolution pretty much tied in a near little bow.

i think my biggest issue with this book is that it just didn’t draw me in all that much and that’s why i just gave it 3 stars. it was just alright. it wasn’t bad by any means, and it was definitely entertaining, but it wasn’t one of those books that you cant stop reading.

i did enjoy the love story that was a big part of the story. the development of it was really good. they started as strangers and you really got to see them grow together.

all around, it was just alright. some of it felt rushed and it seemed like a lot could’ve been expanded a lot more. the ending especially felt very rushed. but all that being said, overall it was a good read and i enjoyed it.

For a prequel it was a bit long but I loved the world building

Not as great as I was hoping it would be.

The world building in these books is amazing. Now I want to go back and re-read ‘Of Fire And Stars’ and ‘Of Ice And Shadows’ to see if I can notice tiny things about the world and the characters that I didn’t before!

I loved this. The story was fascinating and interesting, and I just loved the world building in this.

This book has a magical world and represents LGBTQ characters in a real-world way. A story about love, betrayal, and sacrifice.
