A charming slice of King that’s fun and mysterious, but ultimately a little less than satisfying.

What a tremendously fun book! You know that part in The Shawshank Redemption (the movie, I didn't like the story much - and don't read this if you haven't seen the movie) where the rock is thrown, the poster tears, and then you see Red's head verrrry sloooowly come into view? That's how this whole book felt. It was slow and steady and interesting with only small bits of crazy action. I completely loved that aspect of it. It also did a wonderful job of giving you an idea of what Troop D was like, the sense of family and an idea of what they go through daily. And it made you a part of that in a way because you loved the characters so much. It had a wonderful feel and a smooth pace when the car wasn't eating people or belching them out (that's not exactly what happened but I don't want spoilers).

For me, Stephen King is a difficult author because some of his books are wonderfully done and some of them feel rushed and half put together. I'm very pleased that this was one of the good ones. Also, the narration was totally brilliant. I recommend it very highly.

won me back over in the second half, a slow start but got spooky in a way i enjoyed and was surprised by. i also enjoyed the vague ending, without giving too much spoiler

AUDIOBOOK: “Curiosity killed the cat. Satisfaction brought him back.” A phrase that is repeated throughout the narrative. I kept passing over this title for whatever reason, and I’m glad I finally read it. I really enjoyed this book. I’ve said it many times but SK really knows how to tell a story. The story switches back and forth from past and present but it doesn’t detract at all. In fact, it works really well. I found the characters really likable and relatable. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is about this story but I was intrigued by it. Excellent narration. Highly recommend.
