Brutally honest reflection on what it is to grow up at poor dark skinned black woman in the US.  This was so very good.  Thank you Ms. Davis for sharing your story.

Review: Finding Me

Genre: Non-Fiction
Format: 🎧
Pub Date:
Star Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆

“Forgiveness is giving up all hope of a different past.”

I’ve been a fan of Viola Davis for years, and, if I’m being sincere, I never looked into her upbringing and background. But, after several people recommended her memoir, Finding Me, I decided to pick it up.

One of my favorite ways to read a non-fiction/memoir novel is by listening - primarily if the author narrates it; there is something so intimate about the listening experience. While listening to Finding Me, I often forgot that I was listening to an audiobook and not sitting directly across from Viola Davis herself. I could’ve listened to her all day and not gotten tired of hearing her voice as she led me through the stories of her life.

But let me be honest, Finding Me is not an easy read. At all. It’s full of cruelty and sadness that I have no idea how Davis managed to pull herself up and make the life she did. I had to take a break around the 50% mark and listen to something more uplifting.

💪🏼Powerful
😳 Brutal + honest
😡Shows the disparities in the entertainment industry
💗Her beautiful love story

❌ Sexual abuse, child abuse, domestic abuse, graphic animal abuse/death, alcohol/drug abuse

I recommend reading Finding Me if you’re looking for a reminder to not take the small things so seriously.
