Every once in a while I run across a truly fantastic non fiction book that teaches me a lot of things I didn’t know. This is one of those books. If you didn’t know that the entire US cipher and crypto analytic abilities came from 2 people, you need to read this book. If you didn’t know that this husband/wife were responsible for breaking codes in WW1 and WW2(him Japan, her Germany) and changing the war in our favor you need to read this book. If you have never heard of Elizebeth and William Friedman you need to read this book...their accomplishments and service to this country need to come out of the shadows.

Elizebeth Friedman’s story was incredible and inspiring. The writing left a little to be desired.

"She wondered if history would remember her." This sentence stuck with me more than any other in the book. So many women have contributed so much to help create the world we live in, and they've gone unrecognized for so long. Add Elizebeth Smith Friedman to that growing list. In the past few years there have been a number of books that have begun to shed light on their accomplishments and contributions, and I'm so grateful for that. Elizebeth's story is fascinating, and it should be known.

I thought the prose was a *wee* bit purple at times, but this was an absolutely fascinating read about a woman whose contributions to history should never be forgotten. I'm really, really loving this current trend of biographies dedicated to women whose contributions have been erased for far too long.

Unbelievable that history like this was hidden for so long. I only wonder how many more stories of women have gone untold. 10/10

Enjoyed this book as women like Elizabeth did not get the recognition she deserved not only because she was in a walled-off male dominated field but because of the secrecy involved. Even the Coast Guard gets some overdue recognition in the book.
