My rating of this fairytale collection is based on the experience I had while reading. I am a big nerd for these kinds of stories so I was intrigued to get to know tales that were written in a totally different time period than popular ones. And oh my – this really has been something.
Zur Mühlens stories are heavily based on socialism and values that go hand in hand with this orientation. As usual fairytales emphasize their morals and it can be quite difficult to wrap your thoughts around them in a critical way. Especially concerning issues in terms of racism, politics and violence which are implemented in some parts. If I had to rate the book objectively I wouldn’t rate it with three stars at all, but for me as a person with high interest in this field I would lie if I’d say I wasn’t hooked. Still I need to underline how problematic some parts are.
Every time period is raised in a different value system and we develop the tendency to consider ours superior. Sometimes there is the thought of our belief system to be the most reliable and thought out. Which can be dangerous because history repeats itself if we don’t learn to reflect on events and ideologies from the past. This book helped me to recognize that.
