This is a very readable psychological thriller focusing on how one accusation dramatically affects the lives of two friends and their families. I liked the characters of both Holly and Jules, though they do make several key decisions that to me make no sense whatsoever. Still, the writing is such that I just had to keep reading to find out what happened.

There are passages that could easily be shortened, especially in the first half of the book, but the mystery of what the actual truth is remains an important focus. I really loved Pete, Holly's husband - he's the character who changes the most, and I was very impressed with him in the latter stages of the story. Speaking of the ending, I'm afraid that final chapter is a let-down - there is too much unnecessary explanation and you can see Hancock desperately trying to make all the ends meet up when there was no need to do so - hence the 4 stars, as up until that last chapter, this was a 5-star read.

Jules and Holly have been best friends since university. When Jules's daughter Saffie accuses Holly's son Saul of rape, their relationship is pushed to breaking point.

I Thought I Knew You alternates between Jules and Holly's point of view. Jules believes her daughter, but Holly is convinced that Saul could never do something like this. The story shows the deepening divide between the two characters, as both are desperate to protect their child.

My immediate instinct in this was to believe Saffie, but as the book progressed I began to doubt parts of her story and I wasn't sure who to believe. There was clearly more to the story and my mind went through several possibilities, as I tried to fit the pieces together.

I wasn't sure how I felt after finishing this book. It brought up a lot of emotions, but it is definitely a worthwhile read.

The Fens are known as England’s holy land for a reason. If there’s one thing this land isn’t short of, it’s places to worship. Places to seek forgiveness from the opium-taking and the drinking and the rape and the deviance.

This book is an exemplary example of the suspense novel. It was filled with a discreet number of characters with an important connection between them. There are plenty of twists and turns, some of which you can see coming and some of which absolutely blindside you.

I had not heard of this author before and I am not sure how that's possible. The author writes a thrilling page turner. She is not afraid to create characters that feel real in their flaws and redemption. The pace of this book was the perfect speed and and had the perfect flow.

Nice to discover a new author in the literary suspense genre. Looking forward to reading more from this talented writer. If you like mystery or suspense novels, this is a book for you.

Thank you NetGalley, Penny Hancock, Pan Macmillan and Mantle for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an impartial review; all opinions are my own.
