Total disclaimer - this took me an age to finish. Partly because it took me a little while to get into but also because this book is utterly heartbreaking. Dame Deborah James writes her second book with such a love for life that it is heartbreaking she is no longer around to see the impact that this book and her first will have on people not just necessarily for people with life limiting or terminal illness. Thank you Deborah!

The book that made me reach my reading goal of 2022…. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Dame Deborah James’ candid depictions of her cancer journey were both inspiring and utterly heartbreaking. It was so fast paced and an ‘easy’ read (only in technicality) but you still delved deep into each scenario and emotion and importantly the learnings.
I found it emotionally tough from the very beginning,
her note just before the book started mentioned that her health had deteriorated and she wasn’t going to see this book published was so raw and honest.
it’s that raw honestly that made this book and the end will stick with me for the rest of my life. I still struggle to say more than it being a 5.75/5 read just because of how much it hit me. This was the first book I’ve ever annotated and I will sure be going back to it over and over again.
‘Sometimes the Hardest Challenge is Learning to Live Again’
Whether it’s incurable cancer or depression getting back some semblance of life is always difficult. But it’s always possible.
Hope is what Dame Deborah James had and it was that hope that inspired a nation. I’ve learned that my hope can always be found in nature and getting outside where possible.
Dame Deborah James you were an inspiration to many and a force to be truly embodiment of rebellious hope. Rest In Peace.
