Marroc has been imprisoned for a millennia, cursed, soulless, unable to speak. Not that he had anyone to speak to but still. All he has is his immortality, and the insatiable drive to drink people’s souls from their bodies. So when a thief finds the object in which he housed his soul all those years ago, he immediately feels it. Feels her. For he spelled the object to only be found by his true mate.
Ali - apparently short for Astrid but that doesn’t make sense to me because where’s the L - is a thief and assassin. She had been tasked with stealing a safe deposit box, and somehow failed. The only thing she escaped with was a ring. And escaped really isn’t the right term because she’s actually been caught and thrown in prison. Where she briefly meets the mute, shadowy Marroc.
Their quest was a rollercoaster of danger. From the undead, to a giant squirrel with razor mouth, to a creepy bachelor realm, to toxic octopi, to a big ass sea snake, they are literally never safe. Or have any real sense of calm. And yet they do form a friendship of sorts. I mean Marroc is fully aware she’s his mate and so much more, but she has no idea. About any of it.
There’s a plot twist of sorts at the end but I thought it was fairly obvious where it was headed. Didn’t make it any less thrilling though!
The heavy nod to Norse mythology was fascinating. Some of it is completely nuts - and the characters do acknowledge that fact - but it makes for a great story!
Marroc thinks his motivations are completely aimed at the wand and what it can do for him, yet he is immediately and completely protective of Ali. Throw in some sexual tension and dark humour and you have a winner!
This is book one of a trilogy so a cliffhanger ending.

I just could. not. read this anymore.
The characters were blander than soggy toast. I couldn't handle reading just another time the inner dialogue of how sweet her blood would taste but he needs her alive and her inner dialogue of I must remember what he is. It was painful getting this far in.

Quick read, fast-paced, plot driven.
Since it’s so plot driven there wasn’t a lot of time to develop the characters to feel fully invested in their story.
This is listed as a romance but it is essentially a 0 spice rating. This you are looking for smut, look elsewhere.
Seemed to maybe be more geared towards teens? The repetitiveness in the first half of the book was frustrating. Each character’s inner dialogue kept reminding the reader of their main motivation. Give the reader some credit.
Still, the plot was interesting. A little Percy Jackson in the adventure, some Norse mythology. Interesting enough that I’ll be moving on to the next book in the series.
