This book is a deeply personal and highly researched look at all things Trans. From Bailar's journey of discovering himself as a trans man to dispelling common anti-trans myths, this book is a great, emotional experience while having clear logical roots. Very easy to read and digest - I often found the only reason I wanted to put the book down was to sit with what I'd just read.
Essential reading for anyone who has a trans person in their life or is looking to learn more about Transness in general. Great section on how to be an ally too.

4.5 stars because some of it got a little repetitive for me. Otherwise I thought this was an excellent memoir/comprehensive guide to understanding gender identity - touching on history, science, a little bit of psychology, and a lot of terminology. It’s a great book for allies or anyone wanting to better understand a friend or family member’s experience. It would be excellent reading for any now and future social workers. And should be required reading for any misinformed psychologists or physicians who still think transness is a mental illness. (Spoiler alert: it’s not.) Huge thanks to the author for having the energy to share their story and for their work in educating people on this topic.

A perfect starting place for understanding and definitions. Schuyler offers personal experience to put emotions behind a lot of the guidance suggested. Has great reflective questions to help you be a better ally and support to those in your life and community.

Just finished this great book. It was so well thought out, vulnerable and educational. I have had it on my tbr for a while and finally tackled it. Using relevant anecdotes and research along with a bluntly challenging but informative format, I feel like this book could help a lot of people understand and make us all better people.
Definitely appropriate right now. Already bought and shipped it to a couple people I feel need it. Go read it. 6/5 stars.

I am the parent of two trans kids. I've been an ally and advocate for years, and I learned so much from reading this book! Part memoir, part research reporting, and part how-to guide, it is well documented and beautifully written. I urge everyone to read this book slowly. Make sure you take the time to digest what is being said and consider how you might make the best use of the information to become a better person yourself and to help build a better world.
