I can really tell how saltburn is reminiscent of this novel. I really really enjoyed it. I think the only thing I would have preferred was for more details to be included but I can tell that the narrator wasn't particularly interested in that.

Beautiful and harrowing and quite surprising at times. There's a lot going on with ideas about sexuality and identity and who and what we are.

What is it to be English, to be Catholic? What is friendship, family, love?

I've been a fan of Waugh for a long time so it's funny to wait so long to read what many consider his best novel. But that's life, I suppose. It has a peculiar structure and sort of meanders. It's really more about the talking than the doing, which is often quite good. I mean, here, the talking is what makes the novel, along with the stray lines of prose that hit you like a brick.
