such a marvellously written book but one that dealt with so many different layers and subjects and events that my opinion of it changed quite dramatically back and forth as i was reading. it really does feel like a journey through life. while i enjoyed certain parts more than others (and some parts were particularly unappealing to endure through), the whole novel is one of contemplation and i particularly enjoyed the setting of Oxford (of course) and the religious discussion that permeated the entire work, it was extremely interesting and nuanced and just so well done. i’ve heard this described as a ‘the secret history’ and ‘saltburn’ crossover and i have to say it relatively fits, although ‘brideshead revisited’ really is its own realm from its own time, you can feel it in the language of every sentence. it was rewarding to invest so much time into this novel rather than consuming it all quickly because, even though it was a bit more difficult to get through at times, it made the journey more authentic. i didn’t quite like any of the characters, and i think that was the point. they were good company over the last month. mostly a fan of cordelia, the odd and wise child she is.

Hollywood tells me what to read.

It is fantastic, though. Très witty. What with Dickens and Waugh I might be talking like an uppercrust Englishman for the next couple of weeks. How grand.

Also, isn't this a wicked cover? You love it.
