This book took a very long time to read not because it was lengthy, but because there were many emotions, thoughts, and illustrations that I wanted to fully digest. It was very thought-provoking, and it made me think not only about reconciling with one's family history, but also recognizing one's acceptance of (or absence of) homeland.

Would recommend. Fun and informational. The graphic memoir style is great and I love the scrapbook style and illustrations

Beautifully unique graphic novel - a mix of scrapbooking and illustrations.

Krug's exploration with identity in relationship with the past and her ancestry is incredible. Love the stylistic choices here, too. Combines the graphic novel with scrapbooking and archival- so cool.

a moving exploration of family, guilt, and how history intersects with our lives

I really loved this book. The graphics and the portrayal of this story are really interesting. Her search into her family history and involvement of the war were heartbreaking. The only thing I didn't like about this book is that it was sometimes hard to follow. There are periodic sections about German pieces that make one homesick and I felt it distracted from the overall storyline. There also pages of things she purchased relating to the war or german background that was cool but again, kind of distracting from the storyline. If you read it, I would suggest kindle or physical copy of the book only!
