I grew up in Germany in the 70s and early 80s and then came to the US, and a lots Nora Krug's conflicts about patriotism and history and questions resonated with me. She returned to Germany to work through her family history and explore those feelings. The book is beautifully illustrated.

Fascinating journey of a German woman trying to uncover her family's involvement in WWII. She researches her grandfather, her uncle who died in the war, and her ancestral town to piece together the story of what happened, not in broad terms, but in specifics, while relaying the way German culture was influenced by the arc of a painful history, tempered by societal shame. Not an "easy" read but well written. Audiobook was read by author which helps ground the reader in the politics of the German accent in a post-WWII world.

This was an exceptionally fascinating multi-layered read. It’s a graphic “novel,” which makes each page interesting (do yourself a favor and skip the E-book version and get the hardback). The author deals with her guilt (shame, really, I think) of being German because of the atrocities of the Holocaust (not even marrying a Jew really lessened that for her, she says) while also embarking on a fact-finding mission (mystery of sorts) about her grandparents and great-grandparents (memoir) and their political stances and experiences in WWII Germany. I’ve never read anything like this book! I loved it!

Visually, this book is a masterpiece. I wanted more from Nora's story, but that's also the whole point-- we will never understand, we'll never really know. We can only try to learn from the past and do better in the future.

This is probably the book I recommend to others the most often. It's so beautifully put together and so vividly illustrated. The story will always stay with me and I'm sure I'll be rereading it many more times.

A beautiful, fantastic family memoir. She voiced her feelings so beautifully and the story was so compelling.

I truly feel for her and her struggle to find her identity

I read a physical copy of this book which meant I had no problems with accessibility. The artwork and text may not be rendered to full effect as an e-book, but I enjoyed the at times idiosyncratic layout and artistic style. A deeply personal (but then what memoir isn’t?) and moving exploration of family lore, memory and perhaps the lies people tell themselves to avoid a full accounting of their actions or inactions.
