Dark. Almost oppressive. A woman searches her family's history to understand what they did or did not do in Nazi Germany. Readable but for the subject matter which made it pretty hard to read. For added resonance, an important chunk of the book takes place in Karlsruhe - the only part of Germany I've been to. Certainly shows the quite varied way graphic novels can be used to tell a story. Another book I wouldn't have found without the Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize.

This was such a unique reading experience! I absolutely recommend this book - if only to see the amazing graphics the visuals tell the story in such a completely different way than words could do. The author's heartache as she tried to reconcile her family's history with the terrors of WWII was palpable as she journeyed so many places to get to the bottom of the unknown details of her past.

cried at the end! oops

Life is complicated and is seldom what it seems on the surface. People make decisions based on the circumstances at that time. No real wisdom here, just my take on what the book revealed to me. This book relates to current political climate today. Depending on ones POV. As the saying goes history repeats itself if we don’t learn from the past (or remember the past).

This was one of the best books I have ever read. A German woman's bold and emotional exploration of her family's connections the Holocaust. Beautiful, thoughtful, and deeply resonant.

Some interesting things here, especially about the post-WWII situation in Germany - not something I’ve read about before I don’t think. And there’s some beautiful artwork in this book and creative incorporation of artifacts and objects as metaphors. But I didn’t find the author’s quest to understand her ancestor’s motivations as compelling as I thought I would.
