Fresh take on the genre and non-fiction writing in general. Illustration, narrative and side-boxes work very well.

At one point, it felt like Krug is making too much out of relatively little, but at the very end she found a way to sew it all together nicely. Again, the illustrations are what make the whole thing work, but good storytelling is there too.

Though I do not tend to read memoirs, this graphic family album is an exception I gladly recommend to many, particularly those who are interested in the question of history through a personal lens, through the lens of the looser’s side and for those who do not consider history a black or white, good or evil dichotomy.
This gripped me by the heartstrings and as an emigrant German in the diaspora, it speaks to me even more directly.

To say that this was not what I was hoping for is an understatement. Loved the illustration & design style, but the narrative was lacking and basically just one woman's attempt to absolve herself from the guilt of having Nazi family members.

4.5 stars. The originality of this memoir-collage-scrapbook is amazing to me. Nora raises deep troubling self-examining questions with no easy answers. But still, can we evaluate our situations and improve ourselves and society without layering guilt

An interesting read, and very cool in its design and presentation. As for the topic- I have very different experiences of family and found some things bewildering, and I also don’t appear to suffer from the same immense guilt the author does, but it’s a well-done approach to German family history and it’s influence on the present.

I highly recommend this book. I don’t spend much time reading graphic novels, but it was the perfect format to understand the author’s deep dive into her German family history. I love that the author shared so honestly her doubts and confusion while she learned about her family and their experience during WWII. I read it in one sitting and could not put it down.
