whew. this one unsettles you. it’s very very good. there are some things i think could’ve been handled better, but overall it was very powerful and very interesting. the structure of the book is very engaging, and each character is interesting. there were some places where the prose was clunky and awkward but im chalking that up to translation.

I really loved this book. Each caracter is very diffrent in personnality and in backgroung which alouses us to have a very complete view of the hospital. I learned a lot of things and will surely remember this book for a long time.

Right at the beginning I have to say:
This book might not be for everyone and contains things that might be triggering!
Please read the content warnings!

Personally I really liked this book. It depicts the way mental illness and women who wanted to speak for themselves were treated back in the day.

I'm so glad it is different now, but it was very interesting to read about it.

I think fans of American Horror Story: Asylum might like this book as well.

Really good social commentary on the role of women in Paris during the 1800s and also how mental illness and the "undiserable" was seen in those times. I did not like some of the aspects of the book as I found it unbelievable but other parts were brilliant. However, trigger warnings are needed for this book as thier are graphic depictions of self harm and sexual assault. Overall enjoyable read if not abit unrealistic in its narrative.
