i liked this quite a bit - the characters and relationships all captivated me, but that meant that the frequent perspective shifts weren't my fav. i didn't always feel like i was ready to move on from a perspective when the story did. having the different voice actors in the audio book was cool though, i think it helped me follow better!

What a powerful, beautifully written book. I highly recommend the audiobook narration, which was wonderful.

A slice of life story following the consequences of the decisions you make in life that shape your life. I loved seeing through a family’s perspective - like these events are all impacting the family members differently and seeing their reasoning and the action they take in response was really intriguing. Love Aubrey - what a sweet peach of a man. And Melody was a wonderful character to get to know - so full of vibrant confidence. It was also interesting to book end the family’s historical event ties to the Tulsa massacre and how impactful that was for the family generations later to 9/11 and knowing that it’s setting the characters up for more impact as they go about their lives with most of the members of the family now gone - the only two left being the only two who have not developed their bond as much as the others.

A lot of punch in a small package. Great use of multiple narratives, succinct but enough to connect the reader to the characters.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this was beautiful. The way it’s written is both lyrical and poetic. Jacqueline Woodson includes the beauty of life with the underlying pain. Those sorrows that could swallow you whole, yet you’re taught to push through and keep moving, even as they leave a lasting ache. The characters are easy to understand even if I wouldn’t say I liked or disliked them. For this novel, they just were, and I got that. So much packed into so few pages and still a full story. Just lovely.
