If I read a book more than twice, then I bump the rating to five stars, in general. So, on my third reading....yep. There's something magical here.

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

I didn't like either of the characters, and the pacing felt really slow. The description made the book sound more adventurous than it actually was.

I finished it in one sitting. Very intriguing, and it left me with more questions than answers. I found it difficult to connect with the characters, which is why I am giving it only four stars.

This really wasn’t for me. It is not a bad book, it is more down to personal preferences. I didn’t really feel attached to any of the characters. The romance had some cute moments, but for me it focused a bit too much on the physical attraction of both characters instead of their personality. The amount of time I had to read one of the protagonists got aroused just by being near his crush, really pulled me out of the book.

The magic system had some interesting elements, but since that wasn’t the focus of the book I never got fully invested. I also really didn’t like Jack and how his powers worked and how he would get stronger. What I did really appreciate was how supportive the mom was of her son about everything. It is nice to see really supportive parents.

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Jack of Thorns seemed like a pretty interesting book when I came across it. It honestly was just an okay book (at least for me). Of course the cliffhanger ending makes me want to dive into the next book just to see what the heck is going to happen next... but at the same time - I'd be okay if I never saw the second book in my life?

In it, you will meet Quentin and Laurence. Both guys are simply adorable and quite easy to ship together. They even had a slow burn romance.. which I'm not always a fan of. I will admit, this was okay for me but ugh.. it could've moved a bit faster in my opinion. Besides romance, this book dealt with addictions and paranormal activity. I was hoping for an adventure within each chapter.. but I mostly found myself being bored.

Overall, it had some cute moments that made me smile but the book just okay for me. Wished it was better and I might dive into book 2.. but no idea at this moment.

A really enjoyable read, and hopefully the start to a great series with a pair of completely dysfunctional but loveable characters. Quentin might be a little of a cliche for the romance genre (dark secret, scars from his past, unwilling to open up), but there’s a reason that’s a cliche - it really works! Laurence is a great character (as is his super badass mother) and really holds it together throughout.

I confess, the first 20% I wasn’t sure about - it felt very traditional romance - but once the fantasy elements started to come out (and in fact end up as the main aspect of the plot by the end) I really grew to enjoy the book and look forward to reading more!
