Badass Moms in the Zombie Apocalypse by Rae Carson - 3/5 stars

In a post-apocalyptic world where zombies are drawn to the smell of people in labour and newborn babies, two women flee to safety to bring their baby into the world. I liked this story--I loved the sense of a wider world and community that I'd be interested in seeing more of in more short stories from Carson, and the idea of zombies being particularly attracted to babies was an interesting angle--but I don't know that I'll still be thinking about it in a year's time.

My Country is a Ghost by Eugenia Triantafyllou - 4/5 stars

I'd love to read more from Eugenia Triantafyllou after reading this story, about immigration and ghosts. It's a quiet, melancholic story, but there's still a lot of hope and heart in it.

You Perfect, Broken Thing by CL Clark - 2/5 stars

There's nothing wrong with this story, it simply wasn't for me. The characters were interesting, but the setting was a little too vague for me to grasp why the contents of the story really mattered.

Where You Linger by Bonnie Jo Stufflebeam - 2/5 stars

Another one that just wasn't quite for me! I didn't dislike it, but I don't think it's a story I actively enjoyed either.

And All the Trees of the Forest Shall Clap Their Hands by Sharon Hsu - 5/5 stars

I loved this story, which looks at portal fantasies through the lens of colonialism. It's a response to all those traditional stories about people visiting fantasy lands that addresses some of the injustices that might lead to, and it's a story that will stay with me for a long time. This is going to change the kind of story I expect from portal fantasies in future.

The Spirit of the Leech by Alex Bledsoe - 2/5

There's nothing wrong with this story, and it's actually pretty fun, but in a way it feels like one big punchline. There's nothing wrong with that, but I don't think this is a story I'll remember in a year's time.

Braid of Days and Wake of Nights by E. Lily Yu - 4/5 stars

This story has a unicorn and therefore gets instant points from me. The characters felt very real to me and I loved seeing a female friendship at the centre of the story.
