I listened to this on audio—thank you to libro.fm for the ARC!

I kept seeing this at my work so I thought i’d give it a chance. The author is local—which always makes things better.

I didn’t realize when starting this that it was part 5 in the series. Though, I read you could read them each as stand-alones so I continued, and this is definitely true!

It read great as a stand-alone. I don’t think detective mysteries are for me but I definitely enjoyed it as it is. The characters were enjoyable and the storyline was pretty good! Just as I would have expected it to be :)

Great if you enjoy Louise Penny or other detective mystery authors!

The writing is so painfully simplistic and choppy that I felt like I was reading a chapter book for 3rd graders. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because it was at least semi-fast paced and if you’re looking for something utterly mindless you’ve found the right book. However, if you’re looking for books that are have a similar theme, are fast paced, and actually have good writing try Harlan Coben’s Myron Bolitar series.

A major page-turner!

Okay...I listened but still. I almost finished this book in a day. I've been following Robin Lockwood, a former MMA fighter now defense attorney from the beginning. The Darkest Place is up there with the first book which I thought was the best in the series. This can be read as a standalone mystery-crime-legal thriller.

Two Portland homicide detectives visited Marjorie Loman at her mansion to inform her that her husband was found murdered. Majorie didn't show signs of sadness and laughed at the news because of their pending nasty divorce. She immediately contacted her lawyer to find out where her husband, Joel hid their money which now is hers. As it turns out, Joel had a large debt when two men came and threatened her life if she doesn't pay back what he owes. Majorie fled to a small town for her safety and eventually accepts a lucrative deal to be a surrogate for a couple through a shady lawyer.

After a devastating predicament, Robin Lockwood took some time off and visited her hometown of Elk Grove. She took on a case to defend Majorie who's accused of kidnapping and assault. Then back in Portland, a homicide case.

I enjoyed this fast-moving thriller. The story and twists all came together nicely. Thérèse Plummer's narration is terrific as always.

Thank you Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for this ARC.

An enjoyable addition to this series. The main character is dealing with a devastating loss as she returns to her hometown and gets involved in case that has many parts to it. A former female cop is first accused of abusing her child that she gave up and for kidnapping him and assaulting his new mother. the interplay between the legal work and the investigation was interesting. She then is accused of killing her husband who she was in the middle of a nasty divorce with. So lots of questions and issues to sink our teeth into and a likeable heroine in Robin to follow
