Didn’t understand the hype, he’s a raging racist and the writing was boring.

The father of the modern horror story! It's not always easy to separate the work from the author's frankly horrible, disgusting personality; his prejudices have seeped (quite blatantly in some cases) into his work. That aside, the stories are masterful and gripping. His ability to build up the tension so slowly you dont even notice until the blood is thrumming in your ears makes this a fast, thrilling, truly horrifying read.

3.5 stars average. The balance between the stories I enjoyed and the ones I didn't care for was, sadly, not always favourable. I found myself devouring a story or two and then abandoning the book for weeks because I was not invested in the next one, so my reading experience was uneven to say the least. The one constant was always the creepiness and I appreciate that about Lovecraft's writing.

Regardless of my different options about the many individual stories or the man himself, it was important to me, as a horror reader, to be familiar with Lovecraft's work and I'm glad I dedicated almost a year to properly reading it.

I haven't read all of the stories in this anthology. I want to save some for Halloween. Someone recommended that I read Cthulhu by this author I had never heard about. Lovecraft is a genius at description. His monsters come alive in a very graphic and real way.

The other stories are just as horrifically detailed and delicious. If I had a vocabulary like this man I would make beautiful writing too.

While I don't believe this collection is definitive, it's darn close and I love having the vast majority of the Cthulhu mythos in one book. A must-have for any Lovecraft fan - I just need to find an old, dusty print copy somewhere for my hall of fame shelf...
