To see a world in a grain of sand, and heaven in the wild.

Had very high expectations for this book. It met them in the poetic and romantic descriptions. For an international reader with no ties to the UK I struggled at time with feeling connected to the material, my attention waning, getting a little lost in the geography. MacFarlane is very well read and introduced me to a lot of local writers I want to read in this book though, as well.

Much of our modern maps are based on the routes motor vehicles take, but there are other ways to map a counrty. Robert Marfarlane gives us a map of wilderness of Britain. Well, a partial one, as is the way of these things. We get to go along with him in search of wilderness sleeping outside in crazy places and seeing wondrous things. I don't know if I was that surprised by his conclusions, not that they aren't well worth saying, but I enjoyed the journies the most as they were full of the unexpected and he does do a good turn of phrase. I did get to read this in a pretty wild place myself even if I didn't sleep outside.

He gave me lots to consider about what we think of 'wild' as a place and many interesting places I'd love to see too now.

So evocative...I took my time deliberately over this one, savouring and relishing the immersive descriptions and contrasting them with my own wild adventures.
