4.5 stars. I think I liked this even more than the first. We go deeper into each character and the difficulties they both face with being a good partner and staying true to themselves. Plus, the mystery made more sense to me (although there was a bit about the priest in the last book that helped with some of the problems I had with that mystery).

A strong follow-up to The Reanimator's Heart! This series definitely shines in its two main characters, both as romantic and professional partners and as individuals. I'm enjoying how Jorgensen is spreading out what information to reveal about them, so as a result neither book has felt bloated with personal histories and details. On top of that, we got to see both men interacting with characters in different capacities, from Felipe's relationship with his daughter to the tension between Oliver and his old flame. I still wish Gwen played a larger role in the narrative—I desperately missed her—and although I was pleased with Oliver's realizations regarding Ansley, Ansley himself didn't have as much complexity as I wanted. There was opportunity for it, and we very well might see it in upcoming books, but this one wrapped up in a way that left me wanting more: more from the secondary characters and and overall conflict surrounding the institute and its villains. Definitely hanging around for our sweet necromancer and his slightly dead BF.
