I read Fatal Shadows for the"by or about someone who identifies as LGBTQ" category of the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge. It's a fun whodunit mystery with a solid story line and a compelling protagonist. At times the plot lags a bit, and I didn't feel much for any of the characters save for Adrien, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It is apparently the first in a series.

I think I’m alone in this, but while I enjoy the plot, my dislike of Jake means that it will never get more than 2 stars. Adrien is annoying the hell out me too.

June 2022. Murder mystery series starring a gay writer who writes Murder mysteries and runs a bookstore in the LA area. The inciting incident is his friend/coworker being found murdered in an alley near their work, and our main character being the prime suspect.

Contains two potential love interests, some quirky side characters, and a mystery that continues to get more complicated the more our character Adrien English tries to investigate to prove himself innocent. Contains a couple brief sex scenes, but is far more mystery than romance in the focus of the book.

Really enjoyed this a lot, books 1-3 are available as one rental on Hoopla so I finished the first and plowed straight ahead to the second. Definitely recommend to anyone who thinks it might be up their alley. Same author as the murder mystery tour book, “Murder Takes the High Road,” that I listened to a month or two ago, but unrelated characters.

“Fatal Shadows” (Book 2 of The Adrien English Mysteries) by Josh Lanyon.

Great mystery book. I originally listened to this as a audio book but liked it so much I had to by the Kindle addition. Its a nice quick read or listen which is great for me because normally mystery novels last to long for me and I end up just skipping to the end. but besides the great length I also really liked the humor of the main character Adrien and the other character Riordan. Actually I just liked the general personality of both of them and I can't wait to go on the next adventure with them.

I'm honestly a bit disappointed in this one because I've heard a lot about the Adrien English series. Maybe I will read the next book in the series in the future but right now I don't feel like it but moving on to something else.
I hadn't noticed that it was published over 20 years ago so I was quite confused over what time the book was set in because no-one seemed to have a cellphone and they had physical answering machines to their landline (and, I suspect, a separate device that shows the caller's ID because that was how things worked back in the days).

I've had this on my TBR for a very long time. I have no idea why I waited so long to read it, but I finally buckled down and did.

I have so much love for Adrien (with an e) English. I also liked the mystery of Jake, but we really only get to "meet" him here. Since this is a series, their "relationship" continues throughout the rest of the books, so I wasn't upset by the lack of togetherness.

The mystery was fun to solve. I loved Adrien's determination to clear his name and help his friend.

Entertaining but utterly unsurprising.

Very, very fun mystery novel, but I can tell the romance arc in the nexts books gets messier than I prefer, so I'll leave things here.
