adventurous challenging dark mysterious tense medium-paced

a childhood classic <3

I never realized the amount of research that went into these books. Schwartz was very thorough about where these stories came from, and many are much older than I had assumed. I had never bothered with the bibliography much as a kid, but it's fascinating. And of course the illustrations are perfect.

I think this book ended up being a little less fun than I remembered it, but I appreciate the different stories and verses the author wrote. The writing is simple, but effective. The instructions on how to scare your friends as you tell the story are a cute touch as well. The illustrations are great and held up really well. It's a nice book to give children to widen their imagination and ease them into the horror genre.

The art alone makes this four stars, but the anthology is fun and nicely annotated. Old childhood favorite.

Not what I was expecting. Illustrations were cool though.
