Funny. Very funny in parts. However I found the characters a little clichéd. The treatment of sex within the homosexual relationship was, for me, bordering on being puriant. Is it realistic? I don't know.
Finished too quickly and too conveniently.

I never really get to read books from the perspective of older Black, queer people, especially from a Black, Caribbean, gay man in London, so this was a refreshing new look at queerness I was excited to witness. I went into this not expecting much, but I absolutely loved Barry’s character and how you see his story unfold while also coming to terms about the life he’s lived and the life he’s lost of being in a loveless marriage while being closeted. I love the relationship he has with Morris and how he learns about the queer community and himself throughout the years. I feel like a lot of older Black queer people who are in a straight marriage feel a duty to uphold their end of the vow amid staying together through everything, so I can see how realistic Barry’s situation was, no matter how much I wanted him to leave a wife who also didn’t love him too. I liked getting Carmel’s perspective throughout the years and how she’s grappled with her life so far
I love how Barry helped Donna’s lesbian friend for 11 years by paying for her went and schooling when he found her homeless a year after her and Donna broke up. You can tell that even though he may be ignorant on a few topics of queer identity, he really does have a loving heart and tried his best in life to care for people in his life while also trying to follow his own wants and needs. I like how Daniel apologized to his grandfather about his reaction to telling his friends he was gay. I also like the daughters and how each parent has a daughter on their side. I’m not surprised that Carmel acted the way she did towards Barry when finding out he was gay and I too would also be upset and other things if I find out my marriage was a lie. I liked seeing his daughters, 40 and 50, still figuring out their lives as it shows that people are still in the process of getting to know themselves and the world around them past 30.

4.7

I regret not reading this book earlier.

Hell. Should read all the works of Evaristo. Maybe I should now.

Flawed characters, different perspective of same story, exceptionally beautiful writing. I couldn’t ask for more.
