I read this book when I was at uni so I vaguely remembered the story and what happens, but I enjoyed this reread so much. It explores the themes of relationships, death and parenthood cleverly without being heavy-handed, and the narrative voice is perfect. I could write about this book forever but all I will say is that the last page made me cry and it takes a lot for a book to do that! Can't wait to read more Ishiguro.

My only criticism is around the ending -
I thought the reveal with Miss Emily and Madam was very exposition heavy and considering how well the rest of the book gives the reader information, this could have been handled better!

Narration style in reflective memory. Intimate social interactions foreground, societal conditions and context background, revealed slowly and intensely. Brilliant & fascinating experiential read. Beware: does not give the warm and fuzzies.

It's very melancholy, not v hard into the scifi / medical aspects, irritatingly monologue prone, quite dreamy. Can get boring.
In a word, this book can be described as staid. Not necessarily in a bad way. It's almost autobiographical. No rating as I didn't connect with the book, but it's well written and would be appreciated by others.
