One of the most poignant novels about Asian history I have read. The characters are precisely, delicately, and humanly crafted, and they touched me with the sincerity of the ancestors I never knew. Truly a brilliant literary debut by Juhea Kim, I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

This book is a lot to digest - it'll take me a few more reads to fully understand. Regardless, it's a beautifully written story that follows a young girl and her found family, first love, and best friend as they all grow up and survive under colonial Japanese rule. The romantic subplots were a little hard to follow, mostly because humans are so complicated and emotions are so subjective.

I loved this book. Can't believe it's the author's debut novel. It's set during a historic event that i basically knew nothing about and i think the author did a great job depicting it. I loved the characters, they felt so alive. Even though there's a war going on, no one was written as a hero or a villain, each charachter had their own beliefs, strengths and flaws. They all just felt very human, each capable of doing good and terrible things. You can also tell that the author didn't write this as "x side" was in the right and "y side" was in the wrong. It was just about how terrible war is for everyone and about the human essence that we all share despite our differences.
