Impressive world building! And a great dissection of inequality and oppression. Also, kind of hard to read because the story lacks a driving narrative for most of the book. Still, I'd say it's worth the read.

Too much misogyny and 40% in it is still all world building. Not sure if a story happens eventually

A classic work of Victorian satirical speculative fiction, Flatland is a uniquely creative story. To me, as someone reading in the 21st century and who appreciates (and writes satire) the social commentary often comes off as heavy-handed, though I suspect that to a Victorian mind the commentary would have carried far more amusement. There is an element of world building in the narrative that is both thoughtful and earnest but also tongue-in-cheek; it's a combination I generally don't expect. Worth reading.

After the author was mentioned in Dictionary People, I gave this oddity of a novella a little go. Written in the 1880s, this is a science fiction set in two dimensional space, and follows a square as he lays out how his world operates and his experiences encountering three dimensional, one dimensional, and zero dimensional space. Very cute (although its gender and class politics are difinitively Victorian) and a quick little free read.
