A fairly interesting view on both the understanding of dimensions and a perspective on the time's society that I found neat. Good worldbuilding, but not much else past that, really.

A solid short read.

Very interesting concept and a decent read. Enjoyed the characters of the bright grandson, loved the king of the one dimensional world, and enjoyed the idea that women in Flatland need to constantly make a noise to show they come in peace.

Interesting insight into social attitudes around class and gender. I see that the introduction points out that this was simply describing the way things are and not how they should be, but this side of the analogy got confused in my opinion, with the narrator seeming to give mixed messages and given the apparent objective difference between women and men and different classes. Maybe difficult given the very different social context I'm reading it in, but then again interesting that this was a criticism even at the time that the author felt the need to address.

Some quotes I highlighted:
'The passion of the moment predominates, in the Frail Sex, over every other consideration... being inferior... to the very lowest of the Isosceles, they are consequently wholly devoid of brain-power'
'So my Grandson had disappeared in disgrace... Rousing myself from my reverie... I exclaimed aloud, "The boy is a fool"' (after the grandson suggests there could be a 3d square)
'There arose from the little buzzing creature a tiny, low, monotonous, but distinct tinkling... from which I caught these words, "Infinite beatitude of existence! It is; and there is none else beside It"' (about the one creature that lives in 1d space)

A Sci-fi classic! I find it awfully funny and insightful at the same time to read the geometrical conversation between the interdimensional beings. Wish there were a sequel already in which the speculations of the Square regarding the fourth dimension could be revealed.

It's an older book so the language makes it a bit more challenging. I was amused at the descriptions of Flatland society but the second part is much more interesting and better paced.
