Raina, her mom, her sister Amara, and her brother Will take a road trip from California to Colorado to visit their relatives. The present-day narrative of sibling squabbles and awkward encounters with cousins you don't know is accompanied by flashbacks which give some insight into the current situations. I think many students would find Raina's story very relatable. Raina's family lives in a small, cramped apartment, deals with her father losing his job, and even hints at a potential divorce. By the end of the story, Raina and her sister find some common ground, and the road trip which seemed so long and boring brings them a little closer together.
The illustrations are perfect for the story. Telgemeier is able to showcase emotions and expressions in simplistic cartoon style characters and settings. I especially loved all Amara's angry faces in the flashbacks when people tried to interrupt her drawing; they're hilariously expressive.
This is a great book to get older elementary students into reading. Because it's a graphic novel, it's a pretty quick and easy read, which would be helpful to students who are having difficulties with reading.

Yes, I know this is for prepubescents. I read this simply to feel an ounce of nostalgia.

A splendid book. The relationship between the sisters is real--volcanic and tender by turns. I love the subtle change in the palette that signaled a flashback--so clever! It was like looking at those slightly faded, sightly-off photos one's childhood. Perfect for middle elementary and up.

I can't keep Raina's books on my shelves at the library. I hadn't read her first two, but yesterday I sat and read this at my desk and I am in love. Smile and Drama, you're up next!
