If I hadn't been listening to this one, I would've stopped reading it. But I was sewing and didn't have the mental capacity to decide on something else to listen to. This was pretty rough though.
The narration was okay, but there were random times when it was like someone said "cue dramatic music" and so they did. The music was super random and distracting.
The book itself was repetitive (how many times did I hear that they were Aurora's companions, that she's fae blooded and that she isn't allowed to fall in love each chapter?) And most of the characterization is told, not shown (many times of being told how happy Miriam is that she now has friends, but rare acts that show her friends are any good. Mostly they run around blabbing her secrets.)
It felt like there were too many storylines but not much happening until the end, when it wrapped up in the last 15%. If it's a series, I'm definitely not interested in finishing.

I'm not the target audience, so this could be more stars. This one wasn't for me.
Not YA--a little bit younger.

Not a re-telling of Sleeping Beauty; more Sleeping Beauty adjacent.

It's an old story--a naif discovers a power and has to save a community (see Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker, Meghan Chase, Percy Jackson, and on and on). The plot isn't fresh, nor are the characters.

It's a very busy book--Fae (light and dark), wizards, witches, trolls, dragons, talking animals, King animals, tunnels, magic, wraiths, kidnappings, training, etc. Perhaps a simpler plot and more character definition/world building would have made a better book. Certainly the protagonist, after spending chapters on a quest to discover her grandmother's identity, saying simply, "Well, it doesn't matter who she was. It matters who I am" was supposed to be character growth. It was nonsensical & frustrating.

I couldn't wait for it to end. I prefer Kagawa's Iron Fey series, but that's for an older audience.
