This book also really reminded me of the darkside of communication classes (that I loved and miss) that I took in college. The theme in both Devine's book and the information I learned was on the topic of "brightsiding" someone when they are in a dark place full of pain and/or grief and how that response can be incredibly unhelpful and hurts rather than helps an individual. How just letting people be and asking how to help them as well as just being around can be a more appropriate response rather than the "Well at least blah, blah, blah." Because as people who have been in that mindset knows, that response helps no one and alienates more.
I think everyone should read/listen to this book. It was incredibly insightful, helpful, and for myself had some AHA! moments that were/are supportive. The aha! moments were nice to hear and even though it has almost been 10 years after all the events that led to my own grief, they were very healing and helped me to forgive myself for things I did, ways I felt, or even more importantly things I didn't do while this time was going on and for a couple of years after.

Would honestly recommend this book to anyone willing to relearn how to navigate grief and loss even if you are just learning how to support someone through their own loss. Helpful exercises to learn how to sit with your grief and reassurance that it is okay and absolutely normal to be sad. There is also chapters dedicated to those helping loved ones through loss with advice on what is actually helpful for the griever. So grateful I found this book. It has helped me tremendously after losing my Dad suddenly and unexpectedly. Definitely a book that needs to be digested slowly and only read when it feels right too.
Moderate: Child death, Car accident, Death, Death of parent, Grief, Suicidal thoughts, and Terminal illness

I wish Megan Devine didn’t have to write this book. I wish I never had to seek it out. But it was so incredibly validating and comforting to read her words. I highly recommend, and I particularly value her perspective as someone who had to contend with a completely unexpected death.
